I just started using files too.. The files appear as a subform, and I added a "button" to each row for a "download".. Then I did some JavaScript that will hide the button on rows where there are no files in the "bucket" of that row..
Let me know if you are still having issues with this.. I can post the code, which really is no more than 'putting' all the code together here with a little JavaScript to hide buttons..
