Fatal Error on Initial Login

My setup is:

nuBuilder Forte
php 5.4.16


I know the php version is dated. Followed installation instructions and, upon initial attempt to login as globeadmin, I receive a Fatal Error: cannot use return value at line 72 of nuemailer.php

Is this something that should be resolved by updating php to version 7.2.X ?

I saw a previous comment regarding someone else experiencing a similar error with the latest version of php, so if this is related to the php version installed, what would the best stable version of php to use with nuBuilder?
