I wanted to ask if there is a list of the various zzzz system tables and their scope/use.

Hi Basso,
All table names can be viewed by opening phpMyAdmin or another database tool. The tables contain pretty much exactly what their name says.
Here is a list of tables/views with a brief description.
Let me know if you need more details.
