Illegal mix of collations when pasting data from email.

This is probably a database setting, my database is set as latin1_swedish_ci.
On occasion (first time was today...so) if we copy data from an email to paste into the search box, we got an error:
SQLSTATE(HY000): General error 1267 Illegal mix of collations (latin1_swedish_ci, IMPLICIT) and (utf8_general_ci,COERCIBLE) for operation like 'like'
...
I am presuming it is a different font (it says Calibri if I reply and select the text, or an email from a different part of the world.
After this error, the user has to back out of the browse screen to their home page and then go back into the browse to search again, or the page just sits there.

Is there a setting I can change, either on the database server or in Nubuilder to prevent this error?
The data is all english characters and no spaces - 411T1265-3D
